a weekend out west

I went to San Francisco about a month ago and am finally getting around to sharing the photos! Before we go on that journey, some highlights:

  • The food: I tried pupusas and ate dim sum (long live ham sui gok) and drunken noodles, made tom kha and fruit salad and had Taco Bell overlooking the Pacific sunset

  • The emptiness of the city: I was struck by the quietness and peacefulness of the city, especially late at night when the fog rolls in. Out on a walk one night, I didn’t encounter another person for miles.

  • The culture: interactions with strangers are not focused getting to know each other as fast as possible on networking or proving you’re the coolest/smartest/funniest person in the room, as often seems to be the case in NYC, a magnet for aspiring main characters. Instead, we sat in comfortable quiet, we focused on cultivating wholesomeness, we bonded over homemade food and board games, and everyone went home by 10.

Being on the west coast, and probably my recent infatuation with Red Dead Redemption (2) (in which I mainly avoid the missions in favor of roaming endlessly on horseback, take in the beautifully rendered vistas, and try to be a gentlemanly cowboy), got me thinking about the old wild west. I’d like to see a ghost town sometime. And wander around a desert amongst the cacti. Someday.
